Keeping the Art of Batik Thriving with Batik Boutique

Malaysia is a nation that is accustomed to seeing batik worn during formal events or by government servants. Under the creative vision of the artisans and designers from Batik Boutique, the batik art form has been given a new lease of life with abstract, geometric and floral patterns with a modern twist while staying true to our national cultural heritage to make authentic batik accessible and relevant for everyone, even to the world.

Batik Boutique is an award-winning social enterprise with a mission: to empower artisans from marginalized communities by producing fair fashion, home goods, and accessories made from Malaysian batik.

Through partnering with local batik artisans across Malaysia from both rural and urban areas, we offer a vast selection of batik products ranging from shirts and dresses to homeware and accessories.

It is typical to imagine floral-themed patterns and designs when thinking about batik. With simpler yet modern and sleek designs, we have created ready-to-wear pieces that can be incorporated into your daily wardrobe regardless of age and occasion.

Some best-selling examples are men’s batik shirts in Garnet Firework and Latte Seeds, women’s silk caftan dress in Shibori Mangosteen, and the popular Crimson Fern kimono in silk cotton.

In line with evolving the batik art form for a global market, we diversify our products beyond just apparel. For those who love homewares, we have unique and eye-catching home decor in symbolic prints like Golden Pineapple and Grey Banana Leaf.

Accessories are usually the finishing touches when putting together an outfit to reflect a person’s personality. With that in mind, you can find a variety of selections like the Crimson Nasi Lemak Ketupat bagBlue Nautical Fern tote bag, and KL Skyline Scarf in Teal Rimba, all handcrafted using the ancient wax-resist process of batik, and with a tribute to Malaysian heritage.

Ever seen how batik is made? With the traditional techniques of batik such as canting (a pen-like tool) and block stamping, artists and artisans are able to explore modern and creative designs freely. This then produces an overall pattern or design made into a beautiful, complex and sometimes imperfect batik fabric.

Batik skillfully printed and dyed is then sent to Batik Boutique sewing centers. The seamstresses and tailors, who are from low-income families and refugee communities, receive skills training and fair wages to produce premium quality products. We provide economic opportunities for artisans looking to grow in sustainable skills and break the cycle of poverty.

Our mission is further supported through partnerships with various brands and organizations in creating customized corporate gifts. We have a skilled design team and vast production abilities and have partnered with well-known brands such as IKEA, Spotify, Nestlé, and more to help impact communities on a much bigger scale while meeting client needs for marketing and branding purposes.

Our brand is accredited by the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) as a social enterprise that produces high quality, handmade batik products by local Malaysian artisans. Not only that, but we are also a part of the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations (UN). Some of the goals are our very core values; of disrupting the cycle of poverty. We have continuously produced unique batik for all while impacting the livelihood and sustainability of the artisans and their families.

Batik is back and ready to thrive in Malaysia and beyond. We strive to lead the way in celebrating Malaysian heritage using authentic batik. Let’s do good together and keep the art of batik thriving.
